Artists and Writers Offer Winter Classes
Galena is
known for its vast supply of artists and writers, and as a way
to encourage this creativity to flow, some of these people will
offer classes beginning this month -- all geared toward beginners.
"We
hope people will enjoy branching out and learning something
new this winter," said Kimberley Poe-Jensen, manager of
Hello Galena. "We have so many talented artists that it’s
great to be able to learn from them in a casual environment."
Classes
remain open until they are filled. "There will be a limit
to the amount of people we can have in a class because our facility
is somewhat small," Poe-Jensen said. "But the shop
will be a quaint place to meet some new people and learn a new
skill, especially in the winter when there isn’t as much happening."
Hello Galena
classes are open to pre-teens through adults, with hopes that
even some teenagers will want to sign up. "It would be
a great mother/daughter time or even a great time for a couple
to get away from the kids," she said.
The classes
will be held on Thursday evenings at Hello Galena from 5:30
to 7:30, unless otherwise noted. Many of the classes include
an all-inclusive price, so people do not have to go out and
buy materials. For those classes where personal preference is
part of the creative process, such as a jewelry-making class,
the items will be listed on the website for students to buy
prior to the class.
For people
who are in town for only one week of a class, walk-in rates
are available. Reservations need to be made by 4 p.m. on the
day of the class to ensure space and materials. Various rates
apply.
November's
class starts with a "Holiday Card Club," facilitated
by Mercedes Govert, local
pressed flower artist and painter. This class will allow people
to sit down and create 20 of their own personal holiday cards.
People can create their own cards for less than $2 a card. Govert
will provide cardstock, embellishments and ideas on making cards
personal. These classes will be held Nov. 6, 13 and 20 and cost
$35. There is a walk-in rate for those who can only attend one
session. For this class, the cost is $12 for one night of making
seven cards, and all materials are included in this price.
December
is a time to improve your writing skills,
whether you want to write the best holiday letter possible or
start a memoir. Professional writers for more than 15 years
each, Tom Jensen and his wife, Kimberley
Poe-Jensen, will teach a writing workshop. Tom is the former
assistant city editor at the "Telegraph Herald" and Kimberley
has owned her own magazine and is a free-lance writer for various
publications. During this class, students will learn how to
record their memories and write them into an interesting story.
There will be time for workshop and sharing as well. This class
costs $30 for the month; walk-in rates are $10 for one night
of workshop.
Jewelry
comes to life with Juli Five'O in
our first class of the new year. On January 22, 2009, “Thursday
Night Art" will hold its "So Easy Spiral Bracelet"
with teacher and long-time jewelry maker, Juli Ikonomopolous,
of Juli Five'O. This is a one-night class, but will teach students
the basics of hand-stitched jewelry. She will be available to
help and coach as students make their own spiral bracelet. This
is a one-night only class and costs $30.
Weave
something special into February
with new skills taught by artist Toni
Klingler. As a gourd artist and basket-weaver of many years,
Klingler will have all the needed supplies for first-time weavers
to create their own basket. The basket will be adorned with
an antique-type key, which is why the class is called, "Key
to My Heart." This series of classes will take place Feb. 5,
12, 19, and 26 and costs $65. Because this month's classes require
work in a series for th process of making a basket, no walk-in
classes will be available.
March's
class will be "Painted Porcelain"
with Diane Siese. Students may pick from a variety of
porcelain items and learn to paint them with Siese's expertise.
The cost of $65 includes two pieces of porcelain, but additional
items may be purchased as well. This class will be held on March
5, 12, 19 and 26 and is limited to only six people. No walk-in
class available.
The
class slated for April at Hello Galena
is "Draw Your Favorite Animal" with local rock painter Jacquie
Dyrke. She is known for her realistic paintings of animals
on rocks, which is why she is the ideal teacher on learning
to draw an animal. She will teach people to draw their favorite
animal on paper, with guidance from an experienced artist. The
cost of the class for the month is $55 and takes place on April
2, 9, 16 and 23. Walk-in rate is $15 for one night of direction
and instruction.
The
last class of the "Thursday Night Art"
winter season is called "Perspectives In Art" with Allen
Zver. He will teach students about space, dimensions, drawing
techniques and depth with color values. Students will learn
to create their own art with the direction of primitive painter,
Allen Zver. The classes will be held on May 7, 14, 21, and 28.
The cost for the month-long class is $55. For walk-in's the
cost is $15 for one night of instruction. (Cancelled)
