What
is a Giclée?
If you like art, you should find out!
A GICLÉE
is a wonderful new way of reproducing artwork that will last
as long, if not longer, than an original piece of art. The quality
is so true to the original that nothing else comes closer as
a reproduction. In fact, according to an independent laboratory,
Wihelm Research Laboratory, it is artwork that is printed with
"archival" or "museum-quality" ink.
A giclée
is printed on rag- or fade-resistant papers and have a life
expectancy of 70 to 150 years before you will see any yellowing
or fading of colors. Compared to color photographs, lithographs,
or color photocopies, this is a significant improvement as these
can fade within just a few years.
Giclées
reproduce an artist's original work in a way that will showcase
the colors the artist used and maintain that color for years
to come. It is only within the last 20 years that printing manufacturers
have figured this out, and many Galena artists are using this
form of reproduction.
Giclée
prints are often priced similarly to the original because they
are as long lasting, and the quality is there. This form of
reproduction is also very costly to the artist as each piece
is charged individually, rather than the traditional off-set
method where the cost diminishes with larger quantities. (With
the off-set form of reproduction, only 4 colors are used to
create the artist's work: cyan, magenta, yellow and black.)
The giclée uses 8 colors or more, plus 2 or more blacks,
to reproduce the artwork. This allows most artwork to be as
close to the original as possible.
You will
find giclée prints on canvas, watercolor paper, glossy
paper, adhesive synthetic paper and more. So, if you enjoy art
and want an original, but maybe can't afford it right now, this
might be a good option if the price is right. Stop by Hello
