Hello
Galena! Features “Wonders in Wood”
Wonders
in Wood are featured during June at Hello Galena!, a 100% local
artist co-op. Stop in the shop at 121 N. Commerce Street in
Galena and marvel at art created in the medium of wood by Grant
Barlow, Larry Cording, and Russell Vestuto.
Stop
by Hello Galena for special "meet the artists"
gatherings this month:
- Larry
Cording will be in the shop Saturday, June 5 from 1-4
p.m.
- Grant
Barlow and Russell Vestuto will be on hand Saturday,
June 12 from 1-4 p.m.
Barlow finds
the highly technical, intricate work of creating art from wood
relaxing. He began woodturning in 1994 and continues to be inspired
by the beauty of each piece of wood chosen. His one-of-a-kind
pens, kaleidoscopes, bowls and platters are on display at Hello
Galena! Retired from Abbott Laboratories where he worked as
a fermentation microbiologist, Barlow also enjoys travel, astronomy,
science, and history.
“The grain
structure of wood is amazing. It’s a joy to see the beauty and
character emerge as I lathe the wood for each pen barrel,” Cording
explains. He was mentored in the art by another industrial arts
teacher in the Dubuque community school system nearly 10 years
ago. Cording is a charter member of the Hello Galena! organization,
and his pens are available at the shop.
Whimsical
or abstract, Vestuto’s art will make you smile or scratch your
head asking, “What’s that?” He began making three dimensional
wood pictures in Chicago 40 years ago while working as a model
maker and designer for Ready Metal Manufacturing. Vestuto moved
to Galena seven years ago to pursue his art and crafts full
time. His wooden toys are available in the children’s section
of the shop.
