Hello
Galena Features Galena-Grant Collection
See
local artists' renditions of vintage Galena, contemporary Galena,
and U.S. Grant at Hello Galena! During the months of March and
April, "Galena and Grant" is the theme of the center displays
in the artist co-operative at 121 N. Commerce Street.
New
to the shop are works by the late Edward G. Kelley, a series
of four black-and-white drawings of Galena building/landmarks.
The four, 14"x18" images are the old firehouse and steps, the
Market House, Main and Prospect Streets, and Franklin Street.
A separate print of the Grant Home also is being featured.
During
the height of his career, Kelley was an art director and commercial
artist for several studios in Chicago. He was one of the artists
selected for the Sears and Roebuck "Vincent Price Collection
of Fine Art" and was a contributor to the Art Institute of Chicago's
1961-62 first biennial exhibit of prints, drawings and water
colors.
Over
the years, Kelley spent more and more time in Galena. In 1976,
he moved permanently to Galena and restored the old East Side
School into his residence. Kelley operated EGK Antiques in Galena,
specializing in early American and English antiques.
Kelley
died in 2005. His work was part of the recent The Art Lives
On Pop-Up Gallery show by the Vision 2020 Art Center committee.
Also
on display is a framed print, "Port of Galena" by Wayne Dyrke.
Like Kelley, Dyrke's career was centered in Chicago. He attended
the American Academy of Art and entered the commercial art field
as an illustrator in 1956.
In
1967, Dyrke began exhibiting fine art watercolor and acrylic
paintings, winning Best of Show in his first exhibit. He continued
winning awards during the next 25 years. Dyrke's painting, "Port
of Galena" was chosen for the 2004 Grand Excursion nation-wide
ad campaign.
Written
works about Galena and novels with Galena settings are part
of the feature displays. Authors' autograph sessions will be
announced.
