Hello Galena! News: Released May 28

Hello Galena! announces Mercedes Govert and Sandra Michalik as featured artists of the month of June. Michalik is a three-dimensional artist from East Dubuque. She will host a Meet and Greet event at the local artists' coop at 121 N. Commerce Street Saturday, June 13 from 1-4 p.m. Govert, a painter from Apple River, will host a Meet and Greet event Saturday, June 27 from 1-4 p.m.

Both artists were influenced by people in their past, especially their students. Michalik helped students learn about patterns, series, and numerical relationships during her years as middle school math teacher. She uses her mathematical skill of sequences and series, along with her talent for selecting medium and embellishment, to create each unique basket.

For two decades, Michalik has used her skills and creativity to weave baskets. She discovered her passion during her first weaving class at a local community college. Michalik continues to learn by sharing with other artists at regional conferences and workshops. She tells, "At basket conventions, including North Carolina, Stateline and Camp Tuck, I have taken classes with nationally known teachers."

"Baskets can range from utilitarian to totally artistic," explains Michalik. "I am attracted to Nantucket-style baskets and Shaker baskets made of black ash." Reed, cane and willow are other favorite materials she uses. Many of Michalik's baskets begin with bases made by her husband Larry, an artist of woodworking and photography.

Govert, a former teacher of students with special needs, noticed the artistic talents of the young people and was inspired to study art. She took advantage of the art education opportunities in her area of Chicago at Moraine Valley Community College and Saint Xavier University. "Learning from Jean Weber was a highlight of my artistic development," shares Govert.

Govert creates still life in watercolor and oils. With subject matter provided by her surroundings, Govert captures images on canvas. Her one-word, self-described artistic signature is "flowers." Often Govert makes her work even more realistic by adding the detail of real flowers. Her mixed medium pieces show off dried petals from flowers grown in her garden.
