Sandy Michalik

Michalik helped students learn about patterns, series, and numerical relationships during her years as middle school math teacher. She uses her mathematical skill of sequences and series, along with her talent for selecting medium and embellishment, to create each unique basket.

For two decades, Michalik has used her skills and creativity to weave baskets. She discovered her passion during her first weaving class at a local community college. Michalik continues to learn by sharing with other artists at regional conferences and workshops. She tells, “At basket conventions, including North Carolina, Stateline and Camp Tuck, I have taken classes with nationally known teachers.”

“Baskets can range from utilitarian to totally artistic,” explains Michalik. “I am attracted to Nantucket-style baskets and Shaker baskets made of black ash.” Reed, cane and willow are other favorite materials she uses. Many of Michalik’s baskets begin with bases made by her husband Larry, an artist of wood working and photography.
